[ 01 ] Meaning and Concept of Design

1. Meaning and origin of design 

• The dictionary definition of design includes design, plan, plan, etc. 

• The word design comes from the Latin word designate. 

• The term design has been used since the modern design movement of the 1920s and 1930s. 

• In Korea, the term design has been used as follows.

1950     Design, design 

1960     Use of terms such as industrial art, applied art, and design 

1970     Subdivision into visual design, environmental design, industrial design, fashion design, and craft 

1980     Use of terms such as design management and design business

2. Design concept  : Design = Plan for form + design to fit the purpose

3. Definition of design It is the process of designing and developing an established plan to fit the purpose. It is the integration of aesthetic and functional (practical) elements and expressing them visually

1. Conditions of Design

 • The four major conditions of design are purposefulness, economy, aesthetics, and originality, and when order is added, it is called the five major conditions of design. Other conditions include productivity, which means efficient design in the process of developing, producing, and distributing products.

OBJECTIVE CONDITION

    Multi-purpose

    • Also called objective

     • Refers to whether the design is made in accordance with the target, use, and purpose 

    • Refers to whether the design has both functionality and practicality The most important condition

  Economic efficiency 

     • Price that is in line with economic principles by achieving maximum effect at minimum cost 

    • Reasonable price that matches the target and purpose of use

SUBJECTIVE CONDEITION

  Aesthetic

    •    The harmony of shape and color creates the quality of ‘beauty’.

    •  It is also called the plasticity of the public, and is the standard of beauty of the times Varies according to social personality

  Originality 

    • Creative and noteworthy design that differentiates it from other products meaning

    • Originality must be added to purposefulness, economy, and aesthetics to have vitality as a design. • It is not a completely separate concept from popular plastic arts. 

  Orderliness

It means whether it has a harmonious combination of purpose, economy, aesthetics, and originality

2. Good design 

        • It refers to a design that satisfies purposefulness, economy, aesthetics, originality, and order, and has external originality and convenience. 

        • The Good Design Award is awarded by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion to excellent industrial design products selected by field.     

        • If a product is selected as a Good Design product, the GD mark can be used.
